아포스트로피(') 사용법

1. 생략된 글자나 숫자를 대신하여 쓰는 방법

표기를 일부 생략할 때 사용된다.

she is = she's

I will = I'll 

1963= '63

 

2. 소유격을 나타내는 방법

일반적으로 소유격을 나타낼 명사의 끝단어가 s이면 아포스트포피만 뒤에 붙인다. 

아닌 경우에는 s를 붙인다.

 

Tom's watch

the horeses' tails

boy's

boys'

Jesus'

 

 

*s로 끝나는 복수 명사의 경우 

samples' qualities 와 같이 s를 더 붙이지 않고 아포스트로피만 쓴다.

 

*s로 끝나지 않는 복수 명사의 경우

mice's와 같이 s를 붙여서 사용한다. 

 

*여러 명사의 소유 표현 

한가지를 공동 소유하면 이렇게 쓴다.

The mouse’s and the hamster’s carrot was grown in the campus greenhouse.(x)

The mouse and hamster’s carrot was grown in the campus greenhouse.(0)

 

각각 소유하면 이렇게 쓴다. 

Miller’s and Matthew’s publishing houses are both searching for new and emerging authors.(X)

Miller and Matthew’s publishing houses are both searching for new and emerging authors.(O)
